The Google definition of a cybersecurity analyst goes like this: ‘’To monitor for attacks, intrusions and unusual, unauthorised or illegal activity.’’ 

 

Effectively, these guys are CCTV’s. But for the online world. And although it seems like a walk in the park, this role is MUCH MORE complex than it seems. But don’t worry. This is where I come in to break down the role of cybersecurity analysts for you, so you don’t have to click on 200+ websites to find all the information you need. Let’s get started…

 

THEIR ROLE:

Cybersecurity analysts are KEY players in the never-ending defence against digital threats, tasked with safeguarding an organisation’s computer systems and networks. Their day-to-day responsibilities are varied and critical for maintaining online security for either their client or employer. Let’s take a look at a few:

  1.  Constant Monitoring and Analysis: One of the primary duties of a cybersecurity analyst is to monitor security access logs and reports, checking for any suspicious activity that would have resulted in a major security or data breach. They use enhanced software tools that help in the detection of online strangers in real-time, analysing patterns that could suggest a threat.

  1. Identifying Weaknesses: Cybersecurity analysts undertake regular assessments to identify any weaknesses in their systems. This involves using tools to detect weaknesses in software and hardware configurations (mouses, keyboards etc), as well as assessing the effectiveness of existing security measures. They stay updated with the latest security advisories and threats so they’re always one step ahead of attackers in case of an attack.

  1. Tranquilising Threats: Upon identifying a threat or vulnerability, cybersecurity analysts develop and implement strategies to mitigate these risks. This could involve setting up firewalls, patching software, or updating security protocols. They work closely with other IT professionals to ensure that all aspects of the organisation’s digital world are protected against attacks.

  1. Responding to Incidents: In the event of a security breach, cybersecurity analysts are the ones leading the responses. They assess the damage, contain the breach, and work on recovery measures to restore any compromised data or systems. Part of their role also involves conducting a post-mortem analysis (writing out a detailed report) to understand HOW the breach occurred and developing policies to prevent future incidents from occurring.

WHAT SKILLS & EDUCATION DO THEY NEED?

Now that we’ve taken a look at WHAT cybersecurity analysts do, it’s time to find out the SKILLS and EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS in order for them to even get the role.



Technical Skills:

1. Programming Knowledge: Understanding programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++ is crucial. These skills help in automating security monitoring tasks, analysing malware, and developing security solutions.

2. Networking and Systems Management: They’ll need to gain a solid grasp of how networks operate, including knowledge of protocols and configurations, which is vital for identifying and mitigating vulnerabilities in networks.

3. Understanding of principles: Familiarity with the principles of information security, encryption technologies (for emails etc.), and defensive measures like firewalls and intrusion detection systems form the core of a cybersecurity analyst’s expertise.

4. Data Encryption: In simple terms, this is the method of keeping your emails, messages and anything private safe and secure. Cybersecurity analysts should understand how to decrypt and encrypt data to build strategies on how to further protect data from any phishing attempts or breaches.

Soft Skills:

1. Analytical Thinking: The ability to analyse data and identify trends in security logs is crucial for detecting potential threats. So attention to detail also plays a key role here.

2. Problem-Solving: Cybersecurity analysts must quickly devise solutions to security breaches and think creatively to prevent future attacks from happening.

3. Communication: Clear communication skills are necessary to explain technical issues and security measures to non-technical professionals within an organisation. This ensures they are also aware of measures being taken and potential threats that they should be aware of.

Educational Pathways:

1. Cybersecurity Bootcamps: These intensive training programs are designed to equip participants with foundational cybersecurity skills in a short period, making them a good starting point for aspiring analysts. So this is almost an add-on to legitimate qualifications.

2. Bachelor’s or Master’s Degrees: Degrees in computer science, information technology, or cybersecurity provide in-depth knowledge and are often preferred by employers. A master’s degree in cybersecurity can allow you to further specialise your skills and potentially lead to higher-level positions in the future. (And potentially increase that bank balance…)

3. Certifications: Earning industry-recognised certifications such as the CompTIA Security+, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), or the IBM Cybersecurity Analyst Professional Certificate validates your skills and knowledge to employers. These certifications require passing exams that cover various aspects of cybersecurity and often require continuing education to maintain their knowledge.

In a recent article by GIAC Certifications, they stated that: ‘’72% of certified individuals demonstrated greater efficiency and productivity on the job, producing more in less time.’’ This just goes to show how effective certifications can be for you and for your online portfolio.

IS THEIR OPPORTUNITY FOR CAREER GROWTH?

As with most jobs, cybersecurity analysts also have a place in the job hierarchy, where you can work your way up to the top from the very bottom. So let’s see what each level has to offer:

Starting as an entry-level analyst, you’re at the forefront of detecting and responding to less complex cyber threats. This foundational role is crucial for any organisation looking to protect its digital assets, offering you a solid stepping stone into the world of cybersecurity.

As you gain experience, your advancement will skyrocket. You might move up to a senior analyst position, where you’ll handle more complex security challenges and lead projects. Here, you’re expected to complete multiple complex tasks with minimal supervision, but also have a greater say during business meetings or whilst working with colleagues.

With further experience and perhaps some specialised certifications, roles like cybersecurity manager or consultant will become in reach. These positions involve strategizing and overseeing an organisation’s entire cybersecurity framework, ensuring all areas are secure.
